There were all kinds of bands in the 1990′s from the Grunge bands like Nirvana to the Pop bands like N Sync, and everything in between. The grunge scence was most popular in the early to mid 1990′s. THe most popular bands included Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Alice in Chains, and Tool. These bands used instruments like the Electric Guitar, and Bass Guitar. Love Takes Time by Mariah CareyLove Takes Time by Mariah CareyMost No. 1s By Artist (1990-1999)The 1990’s had many great songs, which made it so hard to pick Grammy winners and Billboard toppers, but yes somehow they did it.Mariah Carey was one of the biggest and most popular female singers in the 90’s. Her songs topped the Billboards Top 100 not one, not two, but 14 times! This is the largest number of times one singer had been on the top in the 1990’s. Her first number one hit, in the 1990’s, was her song “Vision of Love”, which hit number one at the very turn of the decade. She was the first artist to top the Billboard each year of the 1990’s; she spent the most weeks up there also. And her first music video to hit number one was “Love Takes Time”, also in 1990. She earned Grammy Awards for Best New Artist and Best Female Vocalist, and this was only in 1991, and she certainly did not stop there! Next up came Janet Jackson, even though she didn’t even get half as many songs to hit number one, she was still one of the major influences on 90’s music and earned many awards along the way. She got six of her songs to top the Billboard charts starting with “Escapade” in 1990. She had also topped the pop Top Ten many times during her 90’s decade career, and revamped her image several times. Even though these two artists appealed to many young music listeners Celine Dion took the other half by storm! She had filled the ears of the adult part of the nation while topping the Billboard four times beginning with her song “The Power of Love” in 1994. Her first big hit, a duet of “Beauty and the Beast”, won her Grammy and Academy Awards. This woman was certainly not afraid to move in fast forward! From the years 1992 to 1996 she had recorded 6 brand new albums! She had scored the chance to sing “My Heart Will Go On” in the hit movie Titanic. She and Mariah even made an appearance together in VH1’s Divas Live special. These ladies made a huge influence to the music industry and every person that had anything dealing with it too. All of their careers started in the 1980’s, went huge in the 1990’s, and have not stopped since, so they obviously are a big deal to this decade!
In the 90’s one of the most remembered parts of music were the boy bands. They were all very popular with a large young female audience. The young girls fell in love with their new music, they were the first all male groups since the 60’s. The songs usually had to do with love or girls. These growing bands, had choreographed dances for most songs, this also separated them from other bands. During their height, they were always in the public eye; there were posters, clothing and their faces and hit songs all over. This helped them gain an even larger audience. These bands had a significant influence on the teens and young adults of the 90’s. Today, many of these bands are still popular and some of the men from the bands have gone on to solo careers. These bands have had a meaningful impact on the popular boy bands today and many helped the boy bands of today get in to the music business. These boy bands helped to set the stage for the boy bands of today.
The most popular boy bands included: B2K, Backstreet Boys, New Kids on the Block, *NSYNC, 98 ̊, O-Town, and Take 5
All throughout the 1990′s decade people were interested in the techno and the hip hop sound of music. But the popular sound did change all throughout the 1990′s a couple of times. In the early 90′s rock started becoming the new hit, even though the hip hop was still an all around favorite, and would continue to be. Pearl Jam, a new rock bad, introduced teen kids to catchy lyrics about the events going on in not only the bands life, but normal teenage kids also. From the early to the mid-1990’s grudge and alternative rock was listened to by teenagers. Many of the music from the early 1990’s were directed towards teens and young adults. Soon the nation was getting sick of the “young” music and wanted something different to listen too, something more up-to-date. Bands made new music and a more cheerful rock instead of the depressing era of rock they had just listened to. The lyrics displayed a more positive side of emotions instead of the sadness the years of music had brought before. Soon the late 1990’s came around the corner and had given the world a new type of music, the Bubblegum Pop era of music. This era contained the explosion of young bands and singers. Britney Spears, Jessica Simpson, Backstreet Boys, N*Sync, and many more caught the eyes, and ears, of the nation. This music had everybody singing and on their feet. It was an appeal to many age groups, from elementary school kids to even young adults. Many of the genres from the 1990’s are still listened to today, and many of the bands are still an impact on our society. I don’t think anybody will forget the genres of the 1990’s, especially the huge Bubblegum Pop era!
In the 1990’s music was continuing to grow and spread to a large audience. With the new computers, people now could make their own mixes at home with the newly popular CD Burner. They could now use the new CDs to burn their music, and continue to spread the music. With the development of the CD, artist could spread their music to a wider audience, it made it easier to listen to in your home and out. The CD, helped make the music artists of the 90’s become even larger. The radio also grew. people began to have multiple radios in their home and could now listen to them more often and during many different activates. In 1997, one of the largest new technologies for music was introduced, the MP3 player. Before many had portable tape players, now this was a way for people to take more of their music in an easier way. This led to many new companies creating a way for the music to be able to be transferred on to the player, these companies made the player become much more popular in 1998 and 1999. In the 1990’s the new ways of listening to music stated the path for the new efficient ways we listen today.
The 1990’s were filled with great bands, great songs, and great concerts. Although some of the best songs will be remembered, the bands will not. Many of the great songs like Baby Got Back, I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles), and Blue (Da Ba Dee) were all huge hits, but the bands were not. These songs are known as One Hit Wonders. Nearly all of the 1990’s bands were One Hit Wonders. Some of the top rated one hit wonders included bands like LEN, Savage Garden, Semisonic, Chumbawamba, and OMC. These were all bands that had a one hit wonder.
